What is CCA treated timber and do I need it?

CCA stands for Chromated Copper Arsenate — a preservative that is pressure-forced into the timber to protect it against rot, insects (including termites) and fungal decay. Any timber that will be in contact with the ground, set into concrete, exposed to continuous moisture or used outdoors should be CCA treated. This includes fence posts, pergola posts, decking beams and sleepers. Untreated timber in these conditions will deteriorate quickly. Our team can help you identify which applications require treated timber.

The correct thickness depends on the joist spacing and the load requirements of the floor. As a general guide: for joists spaced at 400 mm centres, 18–20 mm structural plywood is typically used for standard residential flooring. For joists at 600 mm centres, 22 mm or thicker is recommended. For mezzanines or floors carrying heavier loads, a structural engineer should specify the correct thickness. Our team can guide you based on your specific joist layout.

Plywood is made from thin sheets of wood veneer glued together in alternating grain directions, giving it good strength, rigidity and a relatively smooth surface. OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is made from wood strands compressed and bonded with resin in a specific orientation, giving it comparable structural properties at a generally lower cost. OSB has a rougher surface and is more susceptible to edge swelling when wet, but is an excellent and widely used structural panel for many building applications.

Warping and splitting are usually caused by uneven moisture gain or loss. To minimise this: store timber flat and off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated area; avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or rain before installation; seal cut ends on site if possible; and use the correct fixing method for the application. Using kiln-dried timber where dimensional stability is important also helps. Our team can advise you on the best storage and handling practices for your specific project.
