Frequently Asked Questions

What pipe should I use for a hot water supply line?

Standard uPVC pressure pipe is rated for cold water only and should not be used on hot water lines. For hot water supply, you need either CPVC (Chlorinated PVC) pipe, which is rated to approximately 93°C, or PP-R (Polypropylene Random Copolymer) pipe, which is fused with heat rather than solvent weld. For geyser connections specifically, copper pipe is still widely used and recommended by many plumbers for its durability and heat tolerance. Our team can advise on the right product for your specific installation.

Solvent weld fittings use a chemical solvent cement to permanently fuse the pipe and fitting together — once set, the joint is watertight and very strong, but it cannot be disassembled. Pressure fittings (also called compression or threaded fittings) use mechanical means to seal the connection and can generally be disassembled if needed. For permanent installations, solvent weld is the most common method for PVC pipework. For joints that may need to be opened for maintenance, compression or threaded fittings are preferable.

Most dripping taps are caused by a worn washer or O-ring inside the tap body. For traditional capstan taps, you can usually replace the washer yourself by closing the water supply at the isolation valve, removing the tap handle and headgear, and replacing the rubber washer at the base of the headgear. For cartridge taps or mixer taps, the entire ceramic cartridge is usually replaced. We stock replacement washers, O-rings, cartridges and headgears for most common tap types. Our team can help you identify the right replacement part.

In South Africa, certain categories of plumbing work — particularly work on pressurised water supply systems, drainage connections to the municipal sewer, and geyser installations — must be carried out by a registered plumber in terms of the National Building Regulations and the regulations of the local municipality. Minor repairs such as replacing tap washers, toilet cistern components or showerheads are generally regarded as maintenance and can be done by a competent homeowner. If you are unsure, always check with your local municipality or consult a registered plumber.
