Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between IBR and corrugated roofing?
Corrugated roofing has a wavy profile — a series of rounded ridges and valleys — and has been used in South Africa for generations. It is cost-effective and widely available. IBR (Inverted Box Rib) roofing has a more angular, box-shaped profile with flat pans between the ribs, giving it greater rigidity and a more contemporary look. IBR can generally span further between purlins than equivalent-gauge corrugated sheeting, and it is the more popular choice for residential and commercial applications. Both are available in galvanised steel and Chromadek colour-coated finishes.
How do I waterproof a flat roof?
Flat roof waterproofing depends on the substrate, the condition of the existing surface and the budget. Common approaches include: torch-on bitumen membrane (the most common and durable system for new flat roofs), liquid-applied elastomeric or bitumen coatings (cost-effective for smaller areas and remedial work), and self-adhesive waterproofing membranes. Proper surface preparation is critical for any waterproofing system to perform correctly. For roofs with existing drainage and structural issues, these should be addressed before applying any waterproofing. Our team can help you identify the right system for your specific situation.
What causes roof leaks and how do I fix them?
The most common causes of roof leaks are: failed or deteriorated flashings at wall junctions, chimneys and penetrations; cracked or slipped roof tiles; corroded roofing screws or failed screw holes; failed waterproofing on flat roofs or parapet walls; and blocked gutters causing water overflow and backing up under the roof sheeting. The first step is always to identify the actual source of the leak, which is not always directly above where the water appears inside. Our team can advise you on the right repair product once you’ve identified the cause.
How long does a steel roof last?
The lifespan of a steel roof depends on the finish, the environment and the maintenance it receives. Galvanised steel roofing typically lasts 20–30 years depending on the zinc coating mass and exposure to coastal or industrial environments. Chromadek (pre-painted Galvalume or galvanised steel) has a factory-applied paint finish that significantly extends durability — properly maintained Chromadek roofs commonly last 30–50 years. Regular maintenance, including cleaning gutters, repairing damaged fixings promptly and painting when the coating begins to deteriorate, is the most effective way to extend the life of any steel roof.
