What gauge wire should I use for a plug circuit?

In South Africa, plug circuits (socket outlets) are typically wired using 2.5 mm² single-core PVC-insulated copper cable — three wires: live (red or brown), neutral (black or blue) and earth (green/yellow). Lighting circuits use 1.5 mm² cable. Higher-load circuits such as stoves (4–6 mm²) and geysers (4 mm² or larger depending on element rating) require heavier cable. The correct cable size depends on the circuit length, the load and the protective device rating. Always consult a registered electrician to confirm the correct specification for your installation.

What is the difference between an MCB, RCCB and RCBO?

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) protects a circuit against overcurrent and short circuit — it trips when too much current flows through it. An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker, also called an earth leakage circuit breaker or ELCB) detects current leaking to earth and trips to prevent electrocution — but does not protect against overload. An RCBO combines both functions in a single device, providing overload protection and earth leakage protection together. RCBOs are increasingly used in modern domestic installations for combined protection on individual circuits.

Do I need a Certificate of Compliance for electrical work?

Yes. In South Africa, a Certificate of Compliance (COC) is a legal requirement for all notifiable electrical work, which includes new installations, additions to existing installations, and major repairs or alterations. The COC must be issued by a registered electrician (a wireman registered with the Department of Employment and Labour). Without a valid COC, your home insurance may be voided, and you may face difficulties when selling your property. Minor maintenance such as replacing a broken switch plate or a globe does not require a COC.

Can I install my own DB board?

Installing or replacing a distribution board (DB board) constitutes notifiable electrical work under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and must be carried out by a registered electrician. The installation must be inspected and a Certificate of Compliance issued on completion. Attempting to install a DB board yourself without the correct registration is illegal, potentially dangerous and will likely invalidate your home insurance. We are happy to help you source the correct DB board and components, but we strongly recommend engaging a registered electrician for the installation.
