How do I calculate how many paving bricks I need?

The number of bricks needed depends on the area to be paved and the size of the brick. For a standard 60 mm x 200 mm x 100 mm paving brick laid in a standard pattern, you need approximately 50 bricks per square metre. To calculate your total: measure the length and width of the area in metres, multiply to get the square meterage, then multiply by 50. Always add 5–10% extra for cutting and waste. Bring your dimensions to us and our team will calculate the exact quantity for you.

What type of pavers should I use for a driveway?

Driveways carry vehicle loads and therefore require pavers that are strong enough to handle the weight without cracking or sinking. Concrete paving bricks with a minimum thickness of 60 mm (preferably 80 mm for double-vehicle driveways) are the standard recommendation for residential driveways in South Africa. The paving must be laid on a correctly compacted and prepared sub-base with a sand bedding layer and proper edge restraints. Thinner decorative pavers and natural stone tiles are generally not suitable for driveways. Our team can advise you on the right product and help you plan your project.

How deep should topsoil be for a new garden bed?

For most flowering plants, shrubs and vegetables, a minimum of 300 mm (30 cm) of topsoil depth is recommended. For lawn establishment, 100–150 mm is generally sufficient. For trees, root depth requirements vary significantly by species, but a planting hole should typically be at least as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. If your existing soil is compacted or poor quality, incorporating compost and topsoil will significantly improve plant performance. What is the best way to prevent weeds growing through paving?

The most effective prevention is a combination of correct installation and a weed barrier membrane. During installation, lay a non-woven geotextile weed barrier over the compacted sub-base before placing the sand bedding layer. This blocks weed roots from penetrating from below. For paving that is already in place, applying a paving sealer can help reduce the settlement of soil and weed seeds in the joints. Polymeric jointing sand — which sets firm when wetted and reduces weed establishment in joints — is also an effective option. We stock both geotextile membranes and polymeric jointing products.
